Ctenanthe setosa 'Compactstar' is a lovely, sturdy and easy to care for houseplant. Similarly to Marantas, their leaves also feature a fishbone pattern which combines dark green and silvery, soft green with dark purple undersides. As an added bonus, new, unfurling leaves are lime green!

Size: 14cm pot x 60cm tall

Origin: Central and South American rainforests.

Light: Filtered sun, bright indirect light

Humidity: Moderate

Temperature: 13-28ºC

Watering: Keep the compost moist (but not soggy) when the plant is actively growing, usually from spring through autumn. Reduce watering frequency in winter if light levels are lower.

Feeding: Use half the recommended dose of a nitrogen rich liquid fertilizer every few weeks during the plant's active growth period.

Soil: 2 to 1 parts of houseplant potting mix and perlite. You can add a handful or two of coco coir to the mix.

Troubleshooting: Crispy leaf tips may be caused by dry air or mineral buildup in tap water. You can help increase humidity levels with a humidifier or placing several plants close together. If you live in an area with hard tap water, you can allow the water to rest in the watering can for several hours before watering or else use rainwater.

Tip: This plant is safe around pets, but keep it away from drafts and direct sunlight.

Did you know? As many other members of the Maranta family do, the leaves of this plant fold upwards and night as if in prayer and open back downwards during the day time. This unusual habit and the fishbone pattern of the leaves have earned this plant the nickname of the Fishbone Prayer Plant.
